Pro bono lawyers available for advice

Two local lawyers are offering 30 minutes of free legal advice to anyone in 100 Mile House who meets the income requirement.

The advice is usually enough to help someone sort out their situation, says the 100 Mile House & District Women's Centre Society office co-ordinator Charlotte Stockford.

If people find they need a lawyer, she adds, they may qualify for legal aid.

Doug Dent, of Centennial Law in 100 Mile, deals with civil and family law and is available on April 18, May 9 and June 13.

Jamie Kidston of Messner Kenney practises civil law and is available on April 7, May 26 and June 2.

The appointments are scheduled between noon and 2 p.m.

To be eligible the monthly household income must be below the following: $3,085 for a family of one to four; $3,625 for a family of five; $4,200 for a family of six; and $4,750 for a family of seven.

It is important for clients to ensure their situation fits with the criteria of the type of law the pro bono lawyer practices, says Stockford.

"It is for 30 minutes of advice. It does not mean you have a lawyer to represent you."
