Last year, the Interlakes Cattlebelles initiated the Tubs & Seeds program at various elementary schools in the South Cariboo.
They are in the planning stages to start again this month.
"We also had a poster contest and had information classes at Bridge Lake, Horse Lake and Canim Lake elementary schools," says Pat Lytton,
"The children had a wonderful time planting their choice of flower seeds and watching them grow."
Lytton says they planted tubs of vegetable seeds, which were supposed to grow salad items, but some of the veggies didn't fare too well.
The main objective for the Cattlebelles is to provide an awareness and education of food by promoting agriculture in the Cariboo.
Lytton, a retired teacher, visited the schools and gave talks to the children about seeds and plant care last year. She also talked of the advantages of different soil and organic matter.
"It was a lot of fun. The kids were quite excited about their flowers, but disappointed in the vegetable tubs, which didn't do too well."
She adds they are thinking about planting potatoes this year.
Lytton says the Cattlebelles really appreciate the teachers for their continuing support of this children's project.
"The tubs are a learning experience for the children, but the teachers are the ones who encourage the kids to look after the plants and water them."
