This is the last call to get Deka Lake and District Volunteer Fire Department (DLDVFD) Ice-Out raffle tickets, at $1 each or six for $5.
Just guess, to the second, when the ice will leave Deka Lake and maybe win one of three cash prizes.
Firefighters needed
The DLDVFD could use more firefighters, especially younger ones.
Many of Deka’s firefighters are in their sixties and
seventies, and while the spirit is willing, the body is simply not as able as it
was in its thirties and forties.
Fire practices are currently held on Tuesday evenings, and ongoing training is provided.
There is also a spot for “future firefighters,” whereby youth aged 13-plus can become fully involved with the department.
Directors needed
Deka Lake and District Ratepayers’ Association (DLDRA) is also in need of help. The board of directors comprises 12 members but, this year, there are only eight, with two of them seasonal residents.
If you consider the things DLDRA has accomplished for the good of the community, channel buoys, streetlights, bulletin boards, etc., you can appreciate that it takes commitment.
DLDRA was also instrumental in starting Citizens on Patrol and several other bodies, such as the Woodlot Committee.
Board member burn-out is imminent. If you could attend one meeting a month to discuss the greater good, call president Hank Hackett at 250-593-4490 or Penny Millway at 250-593-4521.
The annual general meeting is on Aug. 16, and memberships, at $7 each, or $10 per couple residing together, must be paid in order to vote.
Escape route
Happily, the recent firebreak construction around Deka Subdivision includes an extension at the end of Womack Road, which provides a long-requested emergency exit from the subdivision, out to Windy Mountain Road, in the event of wildfire.
Giving a lift
Previous resident Dorette Schiemann has sold her house at Bridge Lake and dropped in to ask me to say hello to all her friends and publicly laud the Interlakes Volunteer Fire Department (IVFD).
She had to move a piano and fridge out of the house and sent an SOS to IVFD. True to form, four strong men turned out to help, thereby earning her undying gratitude.
Co-op meeting
Bridge Lake Community School’s food co-op meets at 7 p.m., April 6.
Call Wendy Dubbin at 250-593-4538 to confirm your attendance or to get a catalogue.
Friends against land swap
Friends of Bridge Lake (FBL) are holding a public meeting at 7 p.m. on April 2 at Bridge lake School.
It’s regarding the potential transfer of Crown land and to the owner of Heritage Island, by way of a land swap.
Are you opposed to this, and/or to the amount of development occurring around Bridge and other lakes? Are you concerned this will set a precedent for other Crown Lands?
FBL needs your support, so please attend the meeting.
Celebrations
Birthday bubbly goes to Deanna Collins, Cheryl Parker and Dan Stewart.
On April 4, Dawn Caldwell turns 14 and Jamie Cook turns 22.
Very many congratulations go to both Isabelle and Les Poirier who celebrate 52 years of wedded bliss on April 3, and Celia and Joe Visscher who celebrated 42 years.
