The South Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department (SGLVFD) is hosting its annual Open House on May 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The local FireSmart crew will have a few tables to visit, so local residents and property owners can learn how to protect themselves and their children and grandchildren, as well as their homes and/or cabins from wildfires.

It will be a great opportunity to learn how to FireSmart your home or cabin and your property to stop them from being destroyed by wildfires.

It will allow your children and their children to build the same great memories of spending time at Green Lake.

The FireSmart highlight will be hosting Ember the Fox, which is the mascot of FireSmart across the country, at the Open House. It will be a great opportunity for youngsters and the young at heart to get their photo taken with Ember the FireSmart Fox.

SGLVFD Chief Roger Graham said the Auxiliary will be having its homemade pies for sale at $10 apiece, the Auxiliary members will have their raffle baskets for sale, so bring some cash.

“There will be a sprinkler protection demonstration set up for your home protection and sprinkler orders will be taken if people want to order any.”

Graham noted all of the fire department apparatus will be on display, including “our new to us” Pumper/Tender.

“This tandem axle unit has a 2,500-gallon water capacity, and with our other two trucks, we will have 4,500 gallons of water available to us immediately upon arrival at a fire scene.”

He adds hotdogs and refreshments will be available by donation.

Cattle fence

There will be an information table at the Open House concerning the cattle fence that runs along the south side of Green Lake.

Volunteers are needed to help with the maintenance of this fence because the current group of volunteers is not going to continue with the maintenance.

“It’s not the local ranchers’ fence to maintain,” Chief Graham said.

Fire Bans

There are currently two fire bans in the Cariboo Fire Centre.

A Category 3 ban went into place on May 4.

It included a ban on any fires larger than two metres in height and three metres in width; three or more concurrently burning piles larger than two metres high and three metres wide; burning more than one windrow; and burning stubble or grass greater than 0.2 hectares.

A Category 2 ban went into place on May 11.

It banned fireworks; sky lanterns; burn barrels and burn cages of any size; Binary exploding targets; and air curtain burners.

The Cariboo Fire Centre stretches from Loon Lake near Clinton in the south; to Cottonwood River near Quesnel in the north; Tweedsmuir Provincial Park in the west; and Wells Gray Provincial Park in the east.

To report a wildfire or an open burning violation, call 1-800-663-555 or toll-free *5555 on your cell phone.

There is a possibility a campfire ban will be in place after the May long weekend.
