Local seniors advocate Sally Watson hosted an affordable food initiative meeting at the 70 Mile Community Club Hall on Feb. 18.
“More than 25 people showed up,” she noted.
She said there was a good turnout to learn about the benefits of forming a buying group for the community of 70 Mile House and local communities, such as South and North Green Lake, Watch Lake, Pressy Lake, and more. Watson said people in other nearby communities would be welcome to join this grassroots initiative.
“Benefits to participants include lower food prices, food security, sustainability, and supporting local businesses,” she noted.
Lower food prices will be achieved by buying in bulk, Watson said.
“Buying in bulk always brings down costs.”
Food security will happen by convincing local gardeners to grow enough of one crop to feed all of the communities, Watson noted.
She said there were a lot of people who grow vegetables and they were positive about growing and providing one crop of vegetables.
Watson added it would be up to the committee members to call the next meeting to discuss the details of how the affordable food initiative will move forward. She suggested the committee members invite local ranchers and egg and meat producers to come to an Affordable Food Initiative meeting.
