I want to echo Alexis Thuillier’s disgust for Sidney council voting in favour of flying the U.S. flag.
Did Sidney council do any research on the purpose of countries' flags? If not, here is a search I did: “Country flags serve multiple purposes, including symbolic representation, national identity, and identification for various purposes. They are used to represent a country's values, history, and aspirations, as well as to distinguish it from other nations."
One way for Canada to protest the changing values, economic assault, a threat to our sovereignty by Donald Trump and his administration is by NOT flying the American flag. The American people had the same democracy as Canada to vote for a leader/party; they chose Donald Trump, and people around the world are suffering, including Canadians. Every level of government needs to support Canadians by expressing our disappointment, disgust, and one way of doing this is to fly only the Canadian flag!
This is not the time to do the “Canadian” thing by being apologetic and weak by showing support with the American flag; this relationship has been fractured by Donald Trump. As long as he is the president, Canada should not show any display of support – especially flying the American flag.
Sidney council needs to stand behind Canada’s sovereignty and take the American flag down.
