After two decades of spending 24/7 arriving by car, feet or lawnmower, on schedule or in emergency, to help out in any one of 50 different ways, Wendy Chase is leaving us. ICC held a farewell party on April 27 to say bon voyage and good luck to the community hall’s favourite all-rounder. The many laudatory comments on ICC’s page indicate just how much she has meant to this community. Luckily, she’s only going as far as Kamloops, but will indeed be sorely missed.

At their April 22 Annual General Meetings, the Roe Lake & District Recreation Commission and ICC Society were delighted to welcome Irene Soares to the societies’ board. She joins president Theresa Draper, vice-president Gary Cleveland, treasurer Vanessa Tveitane, secretary Linda Kliewer, and directors: Dolores Castellato, Barb Goddard, Pat Lytton, Karen McDonald and Chet Powell.

Loon Bay Craft Market

The popular Loon Bay Craft Market on Highway 24 at Sheridan Lake reopens Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and continues every Saturday through September 6. Vendors requiring a space should contact Joan at 250-593-2353.

Bridge Lake Stampede

Make ready for the 74th Bridge Lake Stampede on July 5 at the Stampede Grounds (just off Highway 24 at Bridge Lake Business Route). The rodeo riders’ competition starts at noon and, for the first time, food trucks will be on site. Admission costs: Adults, $20; Seniors, $15; $10 for children aged five to 12 ; and free for those aged under five. Note that admission fees include free camping.

In the evening, the Bridge Lake Community Club will host an outdoor rodeo dance in the beer garden.

Bridge Lake Fair (BLF)

The theme for this year’s fair is CANADA, so vendors are asked to bring a flag to put on their tent and wear something Canadian. Also note that ICC requires vendors to have vendors' liability insurance. Reserve a vending spot by calling this writer. Zucchini car racing rules are somewhat different this year, so be sure to check the booklet, which should be available online around Victoria Day and in print shortly thereafter. Children’s games and colouring contest will both be back. The silent auction will close at 2:45 p.m. and there will be no live auction this year.

Deka Lake & District Ratepayers' Association (DLDRA)

Every year, in order to tidy up the community, DLDRA asks residents to walk around and remove a little roadside trash at all four lakes—Deka, Hathaway, Higgins, and Sulphurous. It’s happening on the morning of Saturday, May 24. There’s a fair bit of garbage, so the more residents who can help, the better.

Then, at noon, everyone heads over to Chris & Ken Schmidt’s home at 7464 Burgess (near the firehall) for hot dogs and pop, where someone will win the door prize!

Art Class

Sulphurous Lake’s Bryan Austerberry’s only summer art class is at Parkside Art Gallery from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, June 7, 14 and 21. The fee is $125 for all three days with all supplies included. Pre-registration/payment is required to:  brasart6@gmail.com
