Watch Lake hosting Fire Smart Community Event May 7

To all of our residents at the Watch Lake-Green Lake Community, we are living in a wildfire-prone area of the Cariboo and if you think you would like to do something about this, the Williams Lake CRD Fire Smart Coordinator, Travis Flanagan, will be coming, once again, to our area. He will do a presentation on the Fire Smart program on how to prepare for the upcoming wildfire season. 

This presentation will be held at the Watch Lake Community Hall and will run for approximately one hour with videos, information, as well as discussions on what we need to do to keep our community safe. The evening presentation will be on Wednesday, May 7, at 7:00 p.m.  Please attend this important event to help protect your community from future wildfires.

35th Annual Fishing Derby

The Watch Lake & Green Lake 35th Annual Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 7 & Sunday, June 8, hosted at the Watch Lake Lodge.

Entry forms and steak dinner tickets are available at Eddy’s Bar & Grill, Tall Timbers Resort, Donex, Lone Butte Sporting Goods and Watch Lake Lodge. Derby entry forms are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 16. Dinner tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children under 10.

The pancake breakfast to start each day from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., then the concession will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. There will be a refreshment garden open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The BBQ steak dinner with all the trimmings is on Saturday at 6 p.m. Steak dinner tickets are available when you purchase your entry form (recommended) or get them on site from 10 a.m. Saturday until they are gone.

Participants can fish either Watch Lake or Green Lake. The prize for the largest fish overall from each lake, either day, is $500 cash per lake. The second largest fish overall from each lake, on either day, is $250 cash per lake. There will be prizes for both under 16 and over 16, as well as many other prizes in various categories and a daily 50/50 draw.

The ceremony for awards, draws and prizes will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. You must be present at the award ceremony to receive the prizes. This event is hosted by the Watch Lake Lodge and the Watch Lake-Green Lake Community Association (WLGLCA), with the proceedsgoing  to the Watch Lake Community Hall Operating Fund.

Watch Lake Community Hall Events

For the month of May, the activities include:

Medicine Movement every Monday starting May 5 at 7 p.m. by donation. This is a blend of yoga, relaxation, fascia release, connection and fun. For more information, contact Jane Rezende at 403-671-9188.

Darts teams are now finished for the season and will commence again in October.  As soon as the dates are confirmed, I will post this information in my column. Fire Smart Community Event on Wednesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. Come and learn about practical and easy ways to mitigate wildfire risks on your property.  The good news it is surprisingly easy to do.

Wildflowers Women's Gathering on Saturday, May 24, from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Cost is $35.  For more information, contact Jane Rezende at 403-671-9188

These activities are open to everyone from our community, as well as other communities.

Calendar

Watch Lake-North Green Lake VFD meets two to three times a month. The next three practices will be on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, May 20, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 31, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. New volunteers are always welcome. If you can find the time, come and join.

WLGLCA next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 14, at the Watch Lake Community Hall. Social at 7 p.m. with the meeting commencing at 7:30 p.m.

Watch Lake & District Women's Institute meets every third Wednesday of each month except for July, August and December at the Watch Lake Community Hall at noon. Bring a lunch. For more information, call Helen Eagle at 250-456-2413 or Joni Guenther at 250-456-7330.
