Happy New Year to all the residents of 108 and all readers near and far. As requested, the residents of 108 have spoken, and the column will now be called ‘The Great 108’ from now on. Many thanks to Chris, Kathi, Harold Transalp and Graham and Marie for your column title suggestions, and from those, the winning suggestion. You know who you are, thanks.
Bingo at the 108
There will be Bingo at the community hall on Saturday, Jan. 18, the doors open at 6 p.m. and games get underway at 7 p.m. BIG bucks to be won so come on out, but be careful, my mom and Milly take their bingo very seriously!
Slow down and drive safely
A member of the 108 Parents advisory committee, Danielle Colbourne, lobbied to have children’s bussing service reinstated in the ranch, after cuts were proposed by the school district. The bussing change was opposed by most parents with many expressing their disapproval.
No sidewalks and no streetlights combined with reducing busr routes made very little sense, and Danielle’s efforts are to be commended.
Speaking of disapproval, speeding continues to plague the ranch, with many drivers blatantly ignoring posted speed limits (the big white shiny signs with the big black numbers on them).
The school zone speed limit is 30 km/h and everywhere else in the ranch is 50 km/h. Slow down, relax, and enjoy the ride, the deer, kids, dog walkers and everyone else will thank you.
Christmas lights completion winners
The Christmas light competition was won by Harold Capnerhurst for most lights, Alisha Piccolo for best theme, Norma and Terry Capnerhurst for most original and Bailey Knuth and Bet Cook for best with the least.
The best neighbourhood displays went to the 5300 Block Annaheim Court. Many thanks to all who did their best Christmas light work, the sponsors who donated the great prices, and the judges who spent hours driving around, totally lost, judging the light displays.
The 108 Mile Ranch is one of the few places where you can get totally, completely lost for hours, but still have a great time enjoying all the Christmas light displays.
Greenbelt Committee opens green space
The 108 Greenbelt Committee has opened all the green space gates for public access and users are advised to please be cognisant of people, wildlife and pets if they are accessing the spaces. Get outside and enjoy the weather and all of the green space.
108 Mile Community Association considers new initiatives for 2025
At the past 108 Mile Community Association board meeting, president Roxanne Ziefflie laid out several initiatives which will be considerations for the board in the coming months.
In early 2025, the installation of new insulation and siding for the 108 Mile Community Centre will take place.
A little more exciting, a new committee has been formed to explore the creation of new outdoor recreation facilities. These would include a covered, all-season sports area, and a gazebo with picnic tables and BBQ facilities for family and community get-togethers’ and events.
Further down the road, an exercise trail and a multi-use amphitheatre will be considerations for the ranch. The current board are very excited about the possibilities for the further recreational use of the 108 Mile Ranch lands for our residents and surrounding areas.
The 108 Mile Ranch Community Association also plans to host a Family Day event on Feb. 17, between 1 p.m. to 4 pm at our community hall. The board plans to have indoor and outdoor events, depending on the weather, including indoor mini-golf, and possibly a snowman-building contest, tubing down the hill for kids and adults foolish enough to tube down an embankment and hot chocolate to comfort your sore backside afterwards. There will be prizes for the games and everyone living at the ranch is welcome, especially families with children or children with fun-loving parents.
The South Cariboo Pickle Ball Association is getting closer to the start of the construction of the outdoor pickleball courts at the ranch. As you may have heard, pickleball, the phenomenon that it is, has become popular worldwide, not just at the ranch.
Before signing off I would like to thank board members, Ingrid Meyer and Sandy Lee, for their insight into the 108 Mile Ranch Committee meetings and past, current and upcoming initiatives/news for the ranch.
Stay safe, and please, anything you think warrants mention in the February edition of ‘the Great 108’, let me know via email(davidradcliffe@shaw.ca).
