I am going to be the first one standing in my doorway waving bye to the month of February! Never have I seen winter jam-packed into the first two weeks of February, it was brutal. Life has become more normal now as it started to warm up, now we have snow melting or evaporating and the gravel roads are wet/muddy with potholes showing up. I will take the warmer weather over the bitter cold anytime.
Folks at Greeny Lake were thankful that the colder weather had disappeared in time for the fishing derby that was arranged for Family Day. Approximately 30 adults and some children registered for the derby and travelled as far away as Williams Lake and Lone Butte to participate. There was only one winner for the large trout and a tie for the largest kokanee, these winners won cash prizes. Other participants in the derby won prizes that were donated by sponsors. Many thanks to Willie and Bonnie Breining for organizing this event on such short notice, this may just be the start of an annual event.
The fundraiser for Tawney Anderson was successful. The folks were generous with their donations and showed their willingness to lend a helping hand with out-of-town expenses. Tawney came home from the Kelowna Hospital but has since had a bit of a relapse and is back in the 100 Mile Hospital. Currently, we are all hoping that Tawney starts to feel better soon and can come home.
The new vinyl flooring is in the kitchen area at the Community Hall and looks lovely. Many thanks to Stan, Kevin, and Mike for being available to remove the appliances to get the work done and then for replacing them when the work was completed. The floor restoration of the main hall is underway and should be completed by March 3.
A flood of mischief has started up in our community - the transfer station was broken into on February 21, and the backhoe battery was stolen. A van was reported stolen from Clarke Avenue on February 26. The latest bit of news is that someone is stealing firewood from Juls Canton’s yard. When will this silliness ever end?
At the crib tournament, 40 players were in attendance and everyone had a super great time, and the spaghetti lunch was yummy! There will not be a crib tournament scheduled for March.
The flea market was busy with visitors, keeping vendors occupied. Many people enjoy socializing with vendors and exploring new products. The upcoming flea market is on March 30, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The flea market takes place on the last Sunday of each month. If there are any changes, there will be ample notice sent out or posted on the board at the Community Hall.
The Rolf Zeis arena has been exceptionally busy, but all good things end. The Old Timers are having their tournament on March 8 and the last public skating will be on March 9. Thank you to all the volunteers who donated their time to make it an enjoyable experience for all.
Bev Fry is hosting a fundraiser for the Rolf Zeis Arena on March 15, a fun day of co-ed hockey running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be two games guaranteed and a possibility of three – all for the cost of $20.00 per person. Come on out and join in the fun. This will be followed by a DJ dance and social at the Lac La Hache Community Hall. The cost of the dance tickets will be $10 per person and that includes snacks. If you would like to donate a gift basket, please call or text 250-706-8418 or 250-706-9611. Other activities offered will be a 50/50 draw, a $5 bucket draw, a bar and a safe ride home program.
Mt Timothy Ski Hill is hosting a dinner and comedy night on March 22. Tickets for this event are $35.00 with Happy Hour starting at 5 p.m.
Other events to look forward to in April – the Thrift Store will be reopening for the season and bingo will be resuming. Please note there is always an open call for volunteers.
Something new is coming to the community. The Lac La Hache Water Company will be offering carbon filtered reverse osmosis water bottle refill station. This new business will be located beside the Cariboo Country Manufactured Homes office.
This will be the last column I will be writing for the Community. I would like to thank all the folks out there who have taken superb photos, if I borrowed one it was to make my column more interesting. Please contact Patrick Davies at simplymastery if you are interested in taking over the writing about our community.
It has been a pleasure chatting with you.
