Straw hats off to Canlan Ice Sports and its organizers and volunteers for their great inaugural South Cariboo Community Fall Fair.
They wanted to put on an old-style country fall fair and they came as close as they could given the facilities.
Hopefully, the 100 Mile Agriplex Society will have its building ready for visitors next year; if so, it would add to the country aspect with some animals and displays geared towards our agricultural community.
As it was, the announcements encouraging fair visitors to stroll out the back door of the arena to take in the 100 Mile & District Outriders 21st Annual Fall Fair Horse Show, which not only provided country entertainment, but it also helped increase the number of spectators in the stands.
The exhibits in the curling rink were good, but there could have been more of them. Perhaps it was the somewhat messed growing season that limited the entries, but, hopefully, this venue will grow next year.
The displays were excellent and interesting, and it was neat to watch the progress of the quilt that was crafted on site during the weekend.
The speaking series was well organized, as the speakers were rotated through in a timely manner.
The arena was a beehive activity all weekend, as people sold their wares and services, and promoted their clubs.
However, it was also a meeting place for old friends and neighbours, as visitors were chatting to each other as much as they were with the exhibitors.
It appeared all of the vendors were happy with the sales they made and the interest they received at their booths.
The larger displays in the parking lot also got significant hits, including the folks manning the BCNU bus, where they provided blood pressure and glucose tests, and handed out bottled water on a very hot Saturday afternoon.
The lineup of entertainment was enjoyed by those who stopped to take in the shows. The music filled the air and added to the fun and excitement.
Two venues were absolute hits this year.
The dunk tank featured good-natured victims and a lot of people willing to pay to have an opportunity to try to get them wet.
The KidsZone was very well organized and a huge attraction for youngsters this year. Our local teenagers volunteered to operate the stations and did a great job.
All told, it was a great event and showed every sign being bigger and better in the coming years.
