Editor,
My husband, I and the community we live in, out of a sense of pride, look after Ruth Lake Park. On Sunday, May 25, a group of very nice young people came to enjoy the park and lake. They used one of the fire pits, which at this time is perfectly fine.
The concern came when they left the park, the fire pit was still burning with some large pieces of wood. We can understand the thinking that the fire is contained in a cast iron bung and will burn itself out. The problem is in the afternoon, as we all know, the wind really picked up. The embers were blown up to the road and right across to the woods.
Two families stopped and put the fire out and our phone rang off the hook. We have put up a sign to gently remind people to put their fires out. We'll even provide a bucket at the park for people to use for this purpose. No shortage of water in the lake.
Let's all have an enjoyable and safe season.
Sincerely,
Paul and Sandy Whitehead
