STUDENT FILES: Graduating class becoming adults

Charlotte Oliver's regular column to the simplymastery

Congratulations to the grads of 2025! They are beginning to start a new chapter in their lives! Yes, becoming an adult is difficult; however, these grads have a positive outlook on their future.

In Grade 12, graduation is one of the only things on your mind. Finally, these young adults are entering the big world! Are they ready for the big step?

“Freedom comes to mind when I think of graduating, and although high school has gone by extremely fast, I do believe that I am ready for the next step in my life,” Kolby Heit, a Grade 12 student eager to graduate, said.

Everyone shares equal thoughts when it comes to graduating.

“I think it’s gone by too fast. I think I’ll miss high school. I’m used to going to classes full of people I’ve known since kindergarten. Familiar people, familiar places. On the other hand, I’m so glad to be done with high school-that place sucked. I’m ready for graduation. I want to go out and experience new things in life now,” Proud graduate Hailey McNeil said.

When entering adulthood and about to live on your own, you must think of the basics. Do you know how to cook, clean, or do laundry?

“I clean my room every day because I find it fun, and I sweep, mop, do dishes, laundry, take out garbage, and clean surfaces,” Eva Rosenstock said, noting she is prepared to live with her friend on campus at TRU.

A survey by Braun Research found that 82 per cent of adults had chores as children, but only 28 per cent of adults today make their children do things around the house.

The students at Peter Skene Odgen are prepared for the chores and challenges that they are going to face in the next step of their journey.

Thinking about graduation and going to university makes me excited, but also nervous. Being away from my family will be hard, although I know that when I go to TRU it will be filled with new experiences and achievements that I can’t wait to succeed in.

When it comes to chores, I have always been raised to clean up after myself and help my mum when she needs help, with things such as setting the table, making dinner, cleaning the house, doing laundry, and other daily chores.

I occasionally house sit and when I do, I feel like I am already adulting. I make all my own meals and clean up the house as I go about.

As the end of our high school years comes to a close, I wish the best of luck to every graduating student and their future plans!
