Editor,
Last year in March I wrote in to express my concern and shock. I could not find a gathering place to celebrate, discuss shared purpose and build trust and appreciation with women in our communities. There was no event marking International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024.
This year can be different. In the past, our “Take Back the Night” and “Murdered and Missing Women” gatherings were well attended. These were times when we were inclusive, we shared food, stories, tears, and drumming, and we demonstrated care. We talked about gender violence and murder; we talked about gender inequality and recognized storytellers and leaders in the communities.
This year’s IWD 2025 campaign focuses on the need to “Accelerate Action,” to bring awareness through narratives, resources and activities to combat gender bias and discrimination. What better time to make our move?
Now our ask. This is totally a community event. If this letter touches you, you are more than welcome to attend our first organized planning meeting at the 100 Mile House Library, at 3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7. This being a community event, my friend Damien and I look forward to your opinions, suggestions and thoughts on how we can fundraise for our casual event on Saturday, March 8, 2025. Perhaps if we “accelerate”, we can urge my friend to sing a song that will be shared at our special evening.
Respectfully,
Sheila Dick
