The Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department’s (DLDVFD) awards event was held at Interlakes Community Centre (ICC,) on Jan. 12, when eight worthy firefighters were honoured for their long-term loyalty and commitment to the DLDVFD.

Fire Chief Dori Dennison thanked honoured guests, including Cariboo Regional District (CRD) chair Margo Wagner and CRD Area L Director Eric deVries, then ran a comprehensive slide show detailing DLFVFD’s history from early 1982 through to include future plans.

Honoured firefighters receiving medals and/or certificates comprised Founding Member Gary Biro, 40 years; Ted Weight, 30 years; Montana Forster and Alan Boyce, 25 years; Tom Nash and Andrew Karassowitsch, 10 years; and Peter Power and Erik Ibsen (who was unable to attend,) five years.

Dennison also specifically named and thanked several community members who have been instrumental in the success of DLDVFD; after which everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet provided by ICC.

Outhouse Races

The annual Outhouse Races hosted by the Fishing Highway 24 Tourist Association (FH24) is on Feb. 16 at the Iron Horse Pub in Lone Butte. The 2024 races were almost cancelled, but a lucky snowfall at the very last minute allowed them to run a scaled-back event. Snowgames like throwing the seat and plunger darts will be included this year. The event opens at 10 a.m. with races starting at 11 a.m. The outhouses parade around before races start, and one will be named the overall “best.”

Each team comprises three people and one outhouse, who race to the end of the course. One must be seated and the others—who must change places twice en route—do the push/pulling. Team Categories are Juniors (six to 16 years); women; men/co-ed.

Sign up your team before Feb. 14 ($10), or on race day before 10 a.m. ($15.)

To sign up, or for more info, visit : https://www.fishinghighway24.com/outhouse-races-registration.html

A buffet breakfast and full menu are available from 10 a.m. at The Iron Horse, but they do NOT take reservations, so it’s first come, first served!
