The Deka Ladies Auxiliary is delighted to award this year’s $500 scholarship to Sheridan Lake’s Michelle Lang.
While fond of sports such as spike ball, volleyball and hockey, and in volunteering, Michelle also expressed interest in both interior design and brokerage. She has a part-time job to help pay for tuition at Yorkville University, where she hopes to earn a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design.
Congratulations, Michelle, and we wish you a wonderful future.
Condolences
Sadly, Deka Lake lost another stalwart citizen when Jimmy Sullivan passed away early on June 9 at the age of 75. Jim was a founding member of Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department, with which he served as a firefighter and captain for many years. The fire hall flag was lowered to half-mast in Jim’s honour.
A Celebration of Life will be announced shortly.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife, Lola, and their family, many of whom live in this general area.
DEKA LAKE Volunteer Fire Department
Everyone is welcome to attend DLDVFD’s open house at the fire hall, 7449 Burgess Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 1.
At 11 a.m., Fire Chief Dori Dennison will speak on fire protection in the community. Attendees will be able to board a fire truck and operate a hose, and enjoy free refreshments. Buying a draw ticket might win you a roof-top sprinkler or a fire extinguisher!

A licensed Darts & Games Night (19+) is on Saturday, July 29 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Beer, wine or cider is $5 each; non-alcoholic wine, $3; pop and water, $1; complimentary coffee. No outside beverages or beverage containers will be permitted. Your $5 entry ticket must be reserved and paid for by July 15; no tickets at the door.
Dave Scott is warmly thanked for designing, making and installing two outdoor Little Libraries! One is in front of MSCC on the side of the chalkboard. The second is at the MSCC Park on the back of the information sign. Both are full of books waiting to be read.
Little Libraries are free neighbourhood book exchanges where anyone can take a book or drop off a book to share with others. No rules and no late fees!
They aren’t just about books; they’re about connecting with your neighbours and providing a way for people to give to their community. They also promote reading, literacy and access for everyone, anytime. If either is running low or needs attention, email mtnspruce@gmail.com so MSCC can attend to them.
Bake The World
Note that Deka’s Alamaz Durand is having her bake sales opposite The Country Pedlar every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Interlakes Volunteer Fire Department
Interlakers were very happy to learn that IVFD’s First Responders program recommenced June 12. While Mahood Lake Corridor is not in IVFD’s protection area, every single one of us uses Highway 24 which, in itself, sees many calls for urgent medical attention, so we all have reason to be grateful to them.
Greetings
Birthday bubbly goes to Kate Adams, Mary Shennum and Don Charlton. Many congratulations to Alyce and Stan Matthews on their 64th wedding anniversary, July 4; and for Susan and Mel Grahn’s 35th on July 9.
