At Mountain Spruce Community Centre on April 26, three local business-women, instructed by Deka’s Debbie Patterson, thoroughly enjoyed themselves making donuts. Four years after the 70th Bridge Lake Stampede, we are finally arriving at the 71st and, to make it even more special, it’s actually on July 1st. Bridge Lake Stampede Grounds (just off Highway 24 at Bridge Lake Business Route) will open for a pancake breakfast at 9:30 a.m. and the hair-raising rodeo riders’ competition commences at noon.

Admission costs $20 for adults; $15 for seniors; $10 for children aged five to 12; and free for wee ones aged under five. Note also that your admission fee includes free camping.

And, for the first time in my memory, the Bridge Lake Community Club is hosting a free outdoor rodeo dance in the rodeo beer garden from around 7 p.m.

Interlakes Volunteer Fire Department (IVFD)

IVFD is holding a Public Open House at Interlakes Community Centre (ICC) from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 27.

In addition to IVFD personnel, ALL our emergency agencies will be in attendance, as well as the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) including CRD Area L director, Eric de Vries. At 1 p.m., IVFD Fire Chief Poul Beer and de Vries will provide for a “discussion.” Guests can tour a fire engine, try on gear, and work a hose! The event will also include a bottle drive with proceeds to IVFD. Hotdogs will be available by donation.

Condolences

Longtime residents were deeply saddened to learn of the April 4 passing of David Colgan. The Colgan Family arrived here in the early 50s, then owners of Sulphurous Holiday Lodge and, later, Moosehaven Resort. They were also instrumental in starting Deka School for their children, David and Linda. David was a highly-respected member of the “Interlakes” community long before it even existed.

Sincere sympathy is extended to David’s mother, Helen; his sister, Linda and famliy; and especially his wife, Laura and their family.

We’ll Miss You, Maggie!

On Saturday, June 3, at 7 p.m., ICC is having a “Farewell” party for Maggie Benzing and her husband Thomas, who are leaving us for a new adventure in Greece later in June. Maggie has been ICC’s Event Co-ordinator for seven years. Her many, many friends are invited to bring an appetizer to share (finger food, please) and come wish them bon voyage and much future happiness.

No Interlakes Farmers’ Market

Sadly, for various unexpected reasons, there will not be an Interlakes Farmers’ Market at the “corner” this summer.

Quilt Show

Mark your calendar for The Log Cabin Quilters’ magnificent 2023 Quilt Show at ICC: July 22 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and July 23 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Be sure to visit the glorious once-in-five years display. Admission costs a mere $5, except that all men and children under 12 years of age get in free!

Mountain Spruce Community Centre (MSCC)

MSCC’s annual Crib Tournament was held May 12. The winner, John Dick, scored +23, followed by Bill Murphy with +7, and then a tie between Joanne Murphy and Elmer Arrance, each with -20 points. The Low Score award went to Shirley Scott with -58. Crib games continue every other Friday throughout the summer.

MSCC is delighted to now have sound-deadening panels which are expected to be especially helpful for Crib and Jam Nights. Many thanks go to MSCC director, John Dick for building and installing them.

Greetings

Birthday bubbly goes to Penny Millway and Herb Moser. Many congratulations to Shelly & Carel Durand on their 41st wedding anniversary, May 30.
