If you have received this mail, open it so you can apply for your Home Owner Grant. Applications have to be made online or over the phone and you cannot just make a mark in the Home Owner Grant box because there isn’t a box anymore. (Ken Alexander photo)

Former Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Area E director and a local seniors advocate Sally Watson wants to remind area residents they can no longer claim their Home Owner Grants by putting a checkmark in a box on their annual Property Tax Notice.

“An old guy from 70 Mile House got caught last year because he didn’t go online or on the phone to claim his Home Owner Grant. Because he didn’t [do it online or over the phone he didn’t get his Home Owner Grant just because it is the new way [the provincial government] is doing it. Now, you can’t just check the box. You have to go online or claim it over the phone.”

Residents can go online at gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant [to apply for their Home Owner Grant]. They can also apply on the phone by calling toll free 1-888-355-2700.

Residents must claim their Home Owner Grant each year and they must provide their social insurance number.

If local residents are having a problem applying online or over the phone, they can call Watson at 250-395-0278 for help.

Property taxes are due on July 4.

Canada Day fun

There will be a Canada Day celebration at the 70 Mile House Community Hall on July 1 from noon to 3 p.m. The day kicks off with the Red Neck Craft Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The TNRD will have a recycling table set up at the event. People will be able to hear about all of the recycling news, have questions answered and, perhaps, receive a gift.

There will also be games – lots of fun games.

Here’s the games lineup: Yard Farkle – a dice game with giant dice; Canada Day Trivia game; Toilet paper roll toss; and Jenga – a wood stacking game.

Fire Department members will also be putting on a demonstration for the public. It will be a great opportunity to meet the firefighters and the new Fire Chief. These people have been busy recently.

Community Club fundraiser

The 70 Mile Community Club will be raising money with a Meat Draw at Eddie’s Bar and Grill, starting at 1 p.m. and going until 4 p.m.

Cabin Fever event a great success

The last of the Cabin Fever fundraising event on April 22 was a huge success.

There was a meat draw, table games; and barbecued hamburgers were available.

Watson said they raised $1,600 for the Community Hall kitchen renovations.

In the previous two events, the Community Club and the 70 Mile Access Centre (SMAC) shared the revenue from the Cabin Fever events.

Watson said all of the money went to the Community Hall because SMAC can’t do anything to its building until the School District turns the buildings over to the SMAC society.
