Shots fired at B.C. café owned by Indian star Kapil Sharma

Surrey police say suspect, motive are still under investigation as global media attention grows

An overnight shooting at a newly opened Surrey café owned by Indian star Kapil Sharma is drawing global attention as allegations fly about who may be responsible.

At least eight shots were fired at the business in Newton, on the border of Surrey and North Delta.

Surrey Police and Delta Police Department responded to a call of shots fired in the 8400 block of 120 Street around 1:50 a.m. on Thursday, July 10.

Kap's Café, a business recently launched by world-famous comedian and actor Sharma and his wife, was the target. Damage to windows showed multiple bullet holes, but police said no one was injured, although staff were still inside at the time.

Video posted to social media appeared to show the shooting.

"Police are aware of the video that appears to show the shots fired incident. Investigators have it and will need to verify the authenticity, but it does appear to be of the incident," said Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton.

Police are also aware of social media posts circulating online that claim German-based Harjit Singh Laddi is taking credit for the shooting, citing offensive remarks allegedly made by a character on The Kapil Sharma Show, a stand-up comedy and talk show.

Those claims are being widely reported by Indian media.

"Police need to let the evidence guide the investigation and determine who the suspect or suspects may be," Houghton said.

Laddi is an an alleged Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operative currently wanted in connection with the murder of Vikas Prabhakar in Punjab in April 2024, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal. The Canadian government listed the Babbar Khalsa as a terrorist entity in 2003.  The government stated under the designation that the Babbar Khalsa "is a Sikh terrorist entity that aims to establish a fundamentalist independent Sikh state called Khalistan."

However, a group advocating for Khalistan's independence, Sikhs for Justice, cautions against jumping to conclusions about the Surrey shootings.

They are calling out what they describe as "disinformation campaigns attempting to link the July 10 Surrey café shooting to the global Khalistan Referendum movement."

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, from Sikhs for Justice, is calling the claims being made by Indian media false and urges authorities to do a thorough investigation.

“This is a textbook effort to frame a peaceful, democratic campaign as criminal,” Pannun added. “The Khalistan Referendum is lawfully underway in multiple countries, including Canada, and continues to receive widespread grassroots support.”

Police would not confirm if the shooting was extortion-related as "the motive has not yet been determined," said Houghton.

Surrey police remain on scene Thursday and the investigation is continuing.

The Surrey Police Service Frontline Investigative Support (FLIS) Team is investigating the shooting and looking at any potential connections to other incidents and possible motives. Police added that there is "no suspect information to share."
