Colour, camaraderie, and canines headline Sooke’s pride festivities this year.
“It’s time to leash up, dress up, and show up for a feel-good celebration of community, connection, and creativity,” announced the District of Sooke in a news release.
On Sunday, June 22, the Sooke branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library alongside Friends of Sooke Parks, and the District of Sooke are inviting residents of all ages and breeds for a lively and prideful afternoon of wagging tails and smiles at the Paws for Pride Parade.
In the spirit of unity, diversity and inclusivity, the event brings neighbours and furry family friends together to create a space of “laughter, wagging tails, and colourful expressions of joy.”
“Whether you’re walking your pup or just joining the fun, everyone is welcome to take part in this family-friendly celebration,” said the district.
The event will kick off a noon at the Sooke Library, where participants and their dogs will come together to enjoy music, crafts and community, and while dogs are not mandatory, they are more than welcome.
At 12:30 p.m., participants will head towards John Phillips Memorial Park, continuing the celebration as they parade down Wadams Way.
“The walk is a short, cheerful route open to all, with wagging tails and neighbourly waves leading the way,” says the district.
The parade will continue in a loop around the trails of John Phillips Memorial Park before the festivities continue with backyard games, face painting and treats for people and pups.
“This is what community is all about,” says Mayor Maja Tait. “Coming together in a playful, welcoming way where everyone feels they belong and are a part of something special.”
While at the park, all pets will need to remain on leash for the duration of the event. For those needing a chance to work off some steam, the off-leash dog park is located just two minutes down the Stickleback Urban Trail.
“Whether you’re bringing a dog, your family, or just yourself, this event is sure to bring a little extra wag to your weekend,” says the district.
“It’s a paw-sitively great way to connect with others in a casual event and celebrate the warmth and kindness that make Sooke special.”
The Paws for Pride Parade will take place Sunday, June 22 from noon to 2 p.m.
