New accessible viewing area opens at Spahats Falls in Wells Gray Park

Part two of major infrastructure project enhances tourism and accessibility in the region at Spahats Falls in Wells Gray Park

Tourism Wells Gray announced the completion of a major infrastructure upgrade at Spahats Falls viewing area on May 23.

It is the second phase of what is being called a broader initiative to enhance the accessibility and visitor experience in Wells Gray Park.

The new platform is part of the Spahats Falls Viewing Platform and Interpretive Trail Project that has now replaced the older wooden structure with a modern, fully accessible platform which has been constructed using fire smart and more durable materials that are designed to withstand the elements and accommodate visitors of all mobility levels.

In 2024 a similar improvement project was completed with a new viewing platform at Helmcken Falls with the goal to make the viewing areas in Wells Gray Park more inclusive, sustainable and accessible for everyone.

“This is a significant step forward for tourism in our region,” said Claire Hanna, executive director at Tourism Wells Gray. “The new platform at Spahats not only improves safety and accessibility but also supports long-term sustainability for one of our most visited sites.”

Tourism Wells Gray points to some key features of the Spahats Falls upgrades which include the stair-free viewing platform with unobstructed access for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, and a fully accessible trail with new interpretive signage informing visitors of the cultural and ecological importance of the area. The fire-resistant state of the art materials used will contribute to the longevity and improved safety for tourists and residents visiting the viewing area for many years to come.

Wells Gray Park is a 1.3 million acre park that is fully accessible via Clearwater Valley Road boasting at least 42 named waterfalls and is famous for its old growth rainforest and spectacular alpine meadows.

In a news release, Tourism Wells Gray noted the improved trail and platform also enhance educational opportunities for visitors to engage with the landscape and learn about local ecology and conservation.

"The enhancements are expected to boost tourism in Wells Gray Park by drawing more inclusive visitation, showcasing the region’s commitment to making outdoor experiences more accessible to all visitors.”

The Wells Gray Visitor Information Centre is now open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. daily at 416 Eden Road just off Clearwater Valley Road. You can contact the visitor centre at: 250-674-3343 or via email at: info@wellsgray.ca
