The Peninsula is gearing up for a vibrant first weekend in May, offering a diverse array of community events that will help residents start the spring season on the right footing.
Preparing for wildfire season
Community Wildfire Preparedness Day is on May 3, and the Central Saanich Fire Department is spearheading the initiative with the launch of the FireSmart BC Plant Program.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Buckerfield's Keating Cross Road, attendees can learn about choosing the right plants to minimize wildfire risk. Experts will be on hand to advise on plants to avoid and ones to incorporate into landscaping to make properties less vulnerable as wildfire season approaches.
Burgers and hot dogs will be available, along with FireSmart plants to take home.
The FireSmart BC Plant Program includes over 50 nurseries and garden centres; residents can check the FireSmart BC website to see if their local garden centre is participating.
Welcoming boating season
Boating enthusiasts can rejoice as the Sidney Anglers Association (SAA) officially welcomes boating season with their Spring Fishing and Boating Swap Meet at the Mary Winspear Centre on Saturday, May 3.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., attendees can snag bargains on new and used fishing gear, boats and boating equipment. Guide services will also be showcased.
Proceeds from the swap meet will be dedicated to salmon enhancement projects.
Getting your garden ready
Gardeners will find plenty to love at the Annual Plant Sale and Garage Sale on May 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 7180 East Saanich Rd. in Saanichton.
Organized by the United Church Women, this spring/summer fundraiser supports various church programs.
The event offers a wide selection of tomato, pepper and flower plants, as well as assorted perennial plants.
A garage sale will also feature a variety of items for home and garden decor.
Supporting the local food bank
On Sunday, May 4, residents can support the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank at a Food Bank Fundraiser Soup & Bunwiches event from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Army, Navy and Air Force Unit #302 in Sidney.
