In hopes of establishing a community hall service for three facilities in the West Chilcotin, Area J, the Cariboo Regional District has launched an alternative approval process (AAP).
Community halls at Anahim Lake, Nimpo Lake and Tatla Lake would benefit from the service because the $30,000 collected through a modified parcel tax would be used evenly to help pay for utilities, insurance and specified improvement projects.
A modified parcel tax limits collection to a maximum of two fee-simple parcels per each unique owner at a rate of about $30 per parcel.
Within Area J there are 1,059 taxable parcels.
Only Area J would pay for the area’s community hall service.
Area J electors in favour of the new service do not have to do anything.
“These halls have been kept going by volunteers in each community, dedicating countless hours to keep them open and running” said Tolin Pare, Director for Electoral Area J in a news released issued by the CRD. “This new service will help alleviate the stress of securing enough funds to keep the lights on and the water running, allowing each non-profit to focus on recruiting more volunteers to help run much needed community programs.”
Those Area J electors who are against it must fill out an elector response form, which is available on the CRD website or at the Williams Lake office, and submit it no later than July 2, 2024 at 4 p.m.
If 10 per cent or more of the electors submit signed elector response forms the project will not go ahead without going to a referendum.
