An evening of vintage swing music with a modern twist will get audience members on their feet and dancing.
Unity Vancouver Island will host the Palace Band on Saturday, April 26, as part of its Bright Lights concert series. The band will be dressed to fit the theme of danceable jazz of the 1920-40s and invites the audience to do the same.
The six-piece band draws from members’ collective history of musical theatre, jazz programs and other musical projects.
The Palace band is Tom Bradbrooke on vocals and piano, Kevin Robinson on standup bass, Luke Sales on trumpet, James McRae on drums, Ashlee Sales on lead vocals and Galen Mongeau on vocals and guitar.
“The raw sounds of old-school jazz return with an energy that will put your feet into motion and a smile on your face, combining soaring vocals with a flash of trumpet and thunder of drums to make the old time new again,” noted a press release from Unity Vancouver Island.
The group formed out of an event known as A Night at the Palace in Errington. For nearly 20 years the community has come together for a night of vaudeville, comedy and burlesque theatre.
“While there was always music involved, somewhere around the middle of this dynasty, a solid core band was formed, to be known as the Palace Band,” the press release said. “It soon became apparent that performing two sold-out weekends a year was not going to be enough to satisfy the appetites of these musical mavericks.”
The show will be at Brechin United Church on April 26, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 at http://eventbrite.ca or $30 at the door.
The Palace Band will also play a show at the Gabriola Golf and Country Club on May 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 at the door.
