Mahood Lake corridor has plenty to offer

Some 33 kilometres from 100 Mile, Horse Lake Road meets the Mahood Lake Road Corridor, which stretches 55 km to Mahood Lake.

Near the south end, which is part of Interlakes, one finds Deka, Higgins, Sulphurous and Hathaway lakes that are home to some 250 permanent residents and a myriad of summer residents.

These lakes provide abundant all-season fishing, and in winter, snowmobilers can travel great distances over a vast network of groomed trails, including up Windy Mountain to its 6,390-foot peak.

Birders will enjoy Mountain Spruce Park, which also embraces trails, rare wildflowers and Heron Lake.

Resorts, guest ranches, a restaurant and several bed-and-breakfasts cater to the traveller’s every need, and many offer water and snow craft on loan.

Deka Lake has a small end (Deka South), and then Deka North is home to the YMCA Wilderness Camp. Avid canoeists can portage between Deka, Sulphurous and Hathaway lakes.

Beyond these lakes is Drewry Lake and, then, the spectacular Mahood and Canim falls, both of which are a short walk off the road.

Deka and Suphurous lakes host fishing derbies on the August long weekend; and family bingo is held at Deka fire hall every Wednesday evening during the summer.

Deka District is strictly residential/recreational, home to free-range cattle in the summer and more wildlife than people, but Interlakes Corner, which has a pub and all the services one needs, is just five km further up Horse Lake Road.
