Electricity won’t change LNG emissions

A letter to the editor of the simplymastery by Hugh Thomas

To the editor:

In his letter to the editor in the April 6 edition of the simplymastery, Minister of Energy and Mines, Bill Bennett says that LNG developers using electricity instead of natural gas to power their facilities will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This is nonsense.

Using electricity to power an LNG plant just means that more natural gas could be exported as LNG.

The exported LNG would travel to its destination on greenhouse gas-emitting ships, to its destination where it is burned, releasing more greenhouse gases.

Minister Bennett is making a ridiculous claim which insults our intelligence.
