LOOK BACK: A Marion steam shovel and the building of the E&N extension

Explore the history of the Alberni Valley with the Alberni Valley Museum

In 1910, as the Age of Steam was waning, a Marion Shovel Model 20 seam shovel, with "John B. Bright" emblazoned on its side, was brought into Port Alberni to build the E&N extension. A crew working on the railroad bed was captured by a photographer. Crewmen are identified as Sam Parkes (engineer), Joe Proessel (craneman), Pete (fireman), Tom Robinson and Barney Salmon (pitmen).
