The Bright Red Bookshelf Program provides new and gently used children's books for families at various places in 100 Mile House and surrounding communities.
During the month of April, the Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL) is holding a book drive because we always need more children's books to keep the bookshelves full.
More than 3,000 books were circulated in 2010. Children can use the books at the Bright Red Bookshelf locations or take a book home to enjoy with the family.
108 Mile Supermarket owner Carl Gimse kicked off the Bright Red Bookshelves book drive by donating the first book.
Carl adds he strongly believes in improving the literacy skills in our communities.
Noting he has always enjoyed reading, Carl notes that as a child he loved reading and would stay up at night pretending to sleep while reading with a flashlight.
We will be collecting books at the following elementary schools, 100 Mile House, Mile 108 School, Bridge Lake, Buffalo Creek, Eliza Archie Memorial School, Forest Grove, Horse Lake and Lac la Hache. We will also be collecting books at the 100 Mile Junior Secondary and Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School.
The schools are open Monday through Friday, from 8 to 3 p.m. Please check in at the office to find the book drop off location.
We will also be collecting books at the following locations:
• 108 Mile Mall, open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Canlan arena, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Free Press office, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
