10 YEARS AGO (2015): Paul and Terry Nichols of Quesnel had been setting off for a couple of weeks on an eight-month, 11,000-kilometre trip across Canada on horseback. They set out from Victoria, B.C. to St. John's, Newfoundland to raise awareness for Canadian military veterans. On March 29 a fundraiser was held at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 260 in 100 Mile House. Paul Nichols had also been serving with the Fourth Canadian Ranger Patrol group, as well as previously serving in the UN Mission in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Paul and Terry Nichols expected the ride to take 200 days.
20 YEARS AGO (2005): B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell and Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon unveiled the first phase of a five-year, $200 million plan to expand Highway 97 to four lanes from Prince George to Cache Creek, which was referred to by the province as the Cariboo Connector. Some of the projects included four-laning the Wright Station curves near Lac La Hache as well as improvements to the Horse Lake intersection in 100 Mile House. Cariboo South MLA Walt Cobb had said the project was long overdue.
30 YEARS AGO (1995): A freak snowfall that occurred on April 10 caught everyone in 100 Mile House by surprise. According to Joe Skopyk, who was with Exeter Towing and Storage at the time, his phone had been ringing off the hook, with 99 Mile Hill having a lot of vehicles stuck due to a loaded trailer that couldn't make it up the hill. Other incidents included a semi-spinning out in 83 Mile. Bridge Lake Towing also had numerous calls from all over the South Cariboo, with the worst being in the 108 Mile Ranch.
40 YEARS AGO (1985): There were 99 B.C. Conservation Officers attempting to cover around one million square kilometres of the province in 1985. This had led to them being spread thin, according to chief conservation officer Ralph Aldrich. The shortage of COs only increased when the provincial government's restraint program came into effect, with Aldrich stating that they lost 12 conservation officer positions. Aldrich said there were 19 districts with a single conservation officer, including 100 Mile House. He said that they would never open any more one-man offices.
