Local Canada Safeway manager Sean Watson has dyed his hair pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM).

"I said I'd get my hair dyed pink the minute we hit $4,000 in funds raised for BCAM," Watson says, adding JD's Styling Salon donated the hair services.

"We are now at $4,700, so for the rest of the month I go pink."

The pink hair attracts attention and questions, Watson says, adding it’s a great way to inform people about BCAM.

Safeway started its fundraising on Sept. 30, and all money is raised through the generous donations of their customers, he notes.

Watson explains that with any $2 donation at the checkout stand, Safeway will give the customer a coupon for one of two free items.

"One hundred per cent of all funds raised will go to the research being done in Kelowna. We can't get anymore local than that for breast cancer fundraising."

Sometime in November, Watson will be having his pink locks shaved off by two cashiers.

The cashiers will be chosen by two different criteria: the one who raises the most money; and the one who has the highest percentage of funds compared to customers.

"Some of our cashiers do not work full time at the check stands and I wanted this to be available to all staff."

A bake sale is slated for the late morning of Oct. 21 held inside the store. All baked items will be donated by staff and customers.

Some silent auction items will be available for bids, Watson says, adding proceeds go towards their fundraising efforts.

"The 100 Mile Angels will be here helping out at the bake table. We have a projected goal of raising $6,500, which, of course, we would like to beat."
