Hydro smart meters coming

BC Hydro is getting ready to install “smart meters” across the province that will tell customers how much electricity they’re using during the day.

People with computers will be able to log into their BC Hydro account and see a nearly real-time display of their electricity use.

BC Hydro is getting ready to install “smart meters” across the province that will tell customers how much electricity they’re using during the day.

The British Columbia program will not immediately come with mandatory higher rates for peak period use and lower rates for non-peak times, such as late at night.

In its business case for the new meters, released Jan. 18, BC Hydro states customers will be offered an opportunity to choose “time of use” rates if they want them.
