Cash incentive being offered to help reduce wood smoke

There is $10,000 worth of incentives for people to replace their old smoke-belching wood stove in the 100 Mile House area.

There is $10,000 worth of incentives for people to replace their old smoke-belching wood stove in the 100 Mile House area.

“We are encouraging homeowners to exchange their old wood stoves for a new efficient ones,” says local co-ordinator Patricia Spencer.

“The intent is to improve air quality in our area. Inhaling particulate matter is bad for our health and respiratory illnesses like asthma.”

Out of the $46,000 from the province given to the BC Lung Association and granted to the Cariboo region, $10,000 worth of rebates are available for the wood stove exchange program in the 100 Mile House area.

There are more stoves to exchange in this area than Williams Lake or Quesnel, says Spencer.

“The 100 Mile House area is allotted 40 stoves, a $250 rebate each, and offers the verified exchanges on a first come first serve basis from now until September.”

Most people exchange their stoves in March or April, says Spencer, but may need time to think about it.

There are three dealers in 100 Mile House that will replace old stoves with more efficient stoves: Burgess Plumbing, Heating & Electrical; Cameo Plumbing; and Mayvin Gas & Heat.

Spencer suggests people call 1-877-992-5833 to verify that their stove qualifies for the program, or visit the website at www.bcairquality.ca/top
