Planning for the upcoming BC Soccer U13 and U15 Boys and Girls Youth Provincial B Cup Finals in 100 Mile House is gearing up, as the July 7-10 date draws nearer.

On Feb. 16, local organizing committee chairperson Jennifer Lindner spoke to South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce members at a luncheon, and asked for their support.

“We want businesses to soccer-up and provide some deals for visitors,” she said, adding businesses could also help out by purchasing ad space in the tournament program.

In addition, she asked them for assistance in securing 12 canopy-style tents that could be borrowed and set out on the fields for the duration of the tournament.

Close to 500 people are expected to flood into the community for the BC Cup event, which will involve 28 competing teams from all over British Columbia.

Lindner said accommodations for visitors are a concern because the number of available hotel rooms in the community will not fill the need. She is hoping people will consider camping, as they do in other centres.

Lindner says that billeting was considered but ruled out of the question by BC Soccer.

Another concern is the lack of adequate parking at the soccer field. The committee is looking at different options, Lindner said, including a shuttle service.

Restaurants, which were approached about staying open on Sunday for the event, were keen on the idea, she added.

“We want to make this a great weekend for those who come.”

The organizing committee is in need of more volunteers and anyone who can help out can contact Lindner by e-mail at tournament.info@100milesoccer.com.

People are invited to attend an organizational meeting March 8 at 7 p.m. at 100 Mile House Elementary School.

A meeting for parents of potential tournament players will take place on March 10 at 7 p.m. at the school library.
