This Canada Day, Salmon Arm Recreation is getting the ball rolling on what it plans to make an annual event.
On July 1, the Shuswap Recreation Society and Salmon Arm Recreation are hosting the 1st Annual Ball Hockey Tournament at Hucul Pond in Rogers Rink (Shaw Centre).
"One thing we noted was that there wasn't a lot being offered for Canada Day in our community, so this was the idea staff came up with," said Salmon Arm Recreation general manager Darin Gerow. "And also, we're trying to expand our programming ideas and events, and this is the perfect opportunity."
Players will be competing for medals, with other prizes to be won. The concession will be open and the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will be open to the public so people can come and cheer on competing teams.
Though registration was less than expected, the event is proceeding with seven teams of 51 youth (divided by their grade level as of September). Those competing in the event must bring a hockey stick and helmet.
"Registration is unfortunately quite a bit lower than we were anticipating, which is quite upsetting because there isn't a lot happening Canada Day," commented Gerow. "Especially with the way the weather is looking, I think this is the perfect opportunity to get out and have a good time."
Registration closed as of June 26; however, Gerow suggested additional teams could still be accommodated.
"If someone had a team and they're ready to show up, we could chat with our programming staff and see if we could fit them in," he said.
Part of the reason for using Hucul Pond is that a new walking track funded by the Rotary Club of Salmon Arm is being installed along the concourse of the Spectator Arena.
