RE/MAX hockey tournament mixes sport with charity

The RE/MAX recreational hockey team has a long and charitable history in 100 Mile House.

The first squad formed in 1978 and in addition to playing weekly games, the team hosts the annual RE/MAX Cup tournament where proceeds are shared with local charities.

In past years, they've supported the RE/MAX Christmas Train, Loaves & Fishes Outreach, Turkey Day and individual needy families.

A child in Senegal, Africa, has also been a recipient of their generosity through the World Vision organization. During the past six years, the child has received $3,000 from the hockey club which helps to pay his health, food and education expenses.

From Feb. 25-27, team RE/MAX will take to the ice again with its eighth annual tournament.

There will be a ladies' division, men's recreational, men's 35 years and older and a men's 45 years and older division.

The event has become popular over the years and is expected to draw 20 teams from Vancouver, Kamloops, Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House.

Tournament spokesperson Greg Lund says the tourney has grown so much that both the South Cariboo Rec. Centre and Lac la Hache Rolf Zeis arenas will be used.

Team entry fee is $700 and includes a dinner and dance on the Saturday night. To register a team, contact Lund by e-mail at glundo@hotmail.com for call him at 250-395-1121.

Spectators are welcome to watch games and cheer on the players. Games start on the evening of Feb. 25 and there will be no admission charge.
