The Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School Senior Girls basketball team lost a close game against Cariboo Rival Lake City Secondary School on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
The PSO Eagles faced the LCSS Falcons last week in what proved to be a tight game for the Eagles, who lost 32-29. Barker said his team led the Falcons for most of the game until the Falcons were able to score a three-pointer in the last three minutes of the game. After that, he remarked the clock became the enemy as his team did their best to reclaim the lead.
"I called a time-out with 59 seconds left and trailing by three points," Barker said. "A play was called, and the girls ran it, giving Ogden a chance at a final bucket, but it rimmed out. "
Barker described how defensive specialist Claire Kreschuk scrambled to steal the ball again to the point of diving onto the hardwood floor "like a linebacker for a fumbled ball." Unfortunately, her efforts proved too little too late as the final buzzer scored.
He noted that throughout the game Amarea Giroux led all Ogden scorers with 10 points and Eva Rosenstock added five in the loss.
"It was bittersweet in that the girls played great defence but just couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. They were fighting the basket all night it seemed. We look forward to playing them again in the New Year," Barker said.
The Eagles will face the Falcons next on Jan. 7 at PSO for a five-game playdown. Barker said the junior boys team will kick the game off at 11 a.m. followed by the seniors girls rematch at 12:30 p.m. In the afternoon the senior boys teams will play, followed by the junior boys teams for a second match up with the junior girls closing out the day at 5 p.m.
Any basketball fans looking to catch the games are invited to come by PSO and cheer the Eagles on the victory.
