Outriders’ gymkhana will add variety to Western Week

A day packed full of gymkhana races promises be a fun part of the Western Week May long weekend events.

The 100 Mile and District Outriders Club will host the first gymkhana of a four-part series on May 23 at the Outriders Grounds behind the South Cariboo Rec. Centre.

Events start at 10 a.m., with all of the favourites, such as barrel racing, pole bending, key hole, speed barrels and baton race, on the schedule.

Gymkhana co-ordinator Jen Szigety says this is meant to be a fun event and participation is open to anyone who has a horse. Age divisions are six years and under, juniors aged seven-11, intermediates aged 12-18, seniors aged 19-38, and Jack Benny for those aged 39 and up.

The entry fee for each event is $3 and the deadline to sign up is 9:30 a.m. on the day of the gymkhana.

Points will be awarded up to third place and riders who make it to at least three gymkhanas in the series will be eligible to win a first-place saddle or second-place belt buckle. Saddles and buckles will be awarded in each division.

The event is free for spectators and there will be a concession on site throughout the day.
