North Central Zone wrestling championships took place last weekend in Quesnel with 100 Mile Wrestling Club', Marina Dykstra bringing home a gold medal in the female 57-kg class.
Dykstra, 16, was the only wrestler representing the South Cariboo at the event, but her win was enough to capture third place for Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School in the girls' division.
The competition was the qualifier for the secondary school provincial championships on Feb. 25 in Abbotsford, and Dykstra is looking for success there.
"Marina is getting ready for provincials and nationals and looks to be on the right course," says her coach Phillip Johnston.
Dykstra was a silver medallist at the 2011 Western Age Class in January and the provincial and national champion in 2010.
On Feb. 18, the 100 Mile Wrestling Club will host the Wrestlemania elementary school wrestling competition in the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School gymnasium.
Matches run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on three mats and the event is open to spectators.
Approximately 130 competitors from the South Cariboo and Williams Lake are expected to compete.
