Dig up some fun at the Cariboo Gold Rush Marathon

Cariboo Gold Rush Marathon, which takes place on Feb. 12 near 100 Mile House, is building up to be an exciting day for skiers.

Cariboo Gold Rush Marathon, which takes place on Feb. 12 near 100 Mile House, is building up to be an exciting day for skiers.

However, there are plenty of reasons for spectators to look forward to the event, too.

The multi-distance classic race, which includes 50-kilometre, 30-km, 20-km, 10-km and four-km distances gets underway at 9 a.m. with a mass start at the 99 Mile Ski Trails stadium.

Race chairperson Nicola Maughn says she expects to have 200 participants who will provide a colourful spectacle when the start gun goes off.

The anticipated crowd of spectators will add to the excitement, she adds, with cheering, bell ringing and shouts of support.

Within one hour, racers will begin to enter the stadium area again, with some completing the shorter distances, and those on the longer haul, completing their first loop of the 50- or 30-km course.

Prior to the skiers return, spectators will have time to visit the 100 Mile Nordics ski lodge to grab a coffee or snack and warm up.

Radio personality Larry Rode is the emcee for the day and will provide a running commentary from the finish line while deejay Chris Pettman from fascination street toys & games will keep the music playing.

Maughn says the marathon is for everybody and it wouldn’t take much to make skiers out of spectators, even if it’s been a while since they’ve strapped on the skis.

There is a 10-km recreational distance and a four-km distance for children where parents can accompany them.

“Anybody can do four kilometres. The new course is gentle and scenic. People on the trail is what is going to make this a success.”

Later in the evening, skiers and volunteers will be treated to a dance and awards presentation event at the 100 Mile Community Hall. Several top prize awards of $250 will be handed out for the fastest times as well as many draw prizes. Awards for the best beard and the best gold rush costume will also be given out.

Registration for the marathon can be done online at www.zone4, or in person on Feb. 11 from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Nordics ski lodge.
