Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School’s teachers played to win Thursday at the South Cariboo Rec Centre.
During the school’s annual grads vs teachers hockey game, the teachers beat their students 10-6. Despite a comeback attempt by the students, they proved unable to match their teachers and parents.
The game opened with the teachers striking first, with Matt Giroday scoring to make the score 1-0. It didn’t get easier for the students, as Justin Guimond, and Kam Taylor, PSO’s physical education teacher, made it 3-0. The students were thwarted by the stellar goaltending of Lee Hansen, assistant coach of the 100 Mile House Wranglers.
Throughout the second period, it did not get any easier for the students. Kam Taylor struck again with his second goal of the night, making it 4-0.
The game was paused to allow for ice cleaning and afterwards, Taylor scored his third goal making the score 5-0.
It seemed as if Hansen would not let anything past him until Carter Nash scored the first goal for the students. At first, this did not seem to mean much, as Kam Taylor scored his fourth goal of the game - until Kurtis Porter and Ethan Davison both scored to make the game 6-3.
Not even a tripping penalty against Aiden Hansen could derail the comeback, as Nash scored a shorthanded goal to make it 6-4. Gibson Fast and a hat trick goal by Nash tied the game at 6-6.
However, hopes of a comeback win by the students were dashed when Taylor scored his fifth goal of the game, making it 7-6. Further goals by Taylor and Giroday sealed the game for the teachers with the final score of 10-6.
The game is played each year to raise money for PSO’s dry grad. A 50/50 draw run during the event raised $175.
Despite the loss, Carson Harris, a student assistant coach for the students, said he was proud of his team - noting they hustled out there. Harris was also stoked that the game helped raise $175 for the graduation.
Kam Taylor, the teacher who notched five goals, said that the game was exhausting, noting in previous years more people were involved directly with the game. Even so, he did say that playing against the students was fun.
