Dozens of 100 Mile Elementary School students took part in their school’s qualifying track and field day last week.
Throughout the school day on Thursday, May 30 students aged 12 to 14 competed in a variety of track and field activities from shot put to triple jump and the 100-metre dash to high jump. Crystal Dawn-Langton, 100 Mile’s principal, said all her intermediate students were expected to participate in at least three events to a maximum of five.
“I couldn’t ask for anything better, the kids are having a great time and everyone is acting like a really good sportsman and cheering on their friends,” Dawn-Langton said. “The weather has been great and we have a bunch of parents out to cheer their kids on as well, which is always nice to see.”
The top two athletes in each category, in addition to bragging rights, will go on to represent 100 Mile Elementary at the Interschools Track Meet on June 13. Dawn-Langton said they’ll host athletes from Mile 108 Elementary, Forest Grove Elementary, Horse Lake Elementary and Eliza Archie Memorial School.
“I hope that (100 Mile) is going to dominate, but so long as my kids are out here having a good time and being good citizens and sportsmen, I’m happy,” Dawn-Langton remarked. “I think sports is a good thing. Kids moving their bodies, getting fresh air and cheering each other on (is good) but also (so is) feeling defeat and knowing it’s ok sometimes to lose.”
Dawn-Langton noted the event is also a good way to build friendships between the schools, especially as their Grade 7 classes prepare to go to high school together next year. She encourages any family or friends of the students who go on to participate in the Interschools Track Meet to come out and watch.
