Haircuts for low-income families

Volunteers offer complimentary cuts before Christmas

100 Mile Barber Shop owner Leah Pratt and Tina's Hair Salon owner Tina Desrosiers will be donating their time and skill to give local low-income folks a free haircut before Christmas.

Pratt says they will team up together to offer these free haircuts on their regular day off at the 100 Mile Barber Shop on Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It will open that Sunday only for community members who cannot otherwise afford a haircut, she explains.

Everyone who does not have the cash to pay for a haircut before Christmas is welcome to go and get one for free on a first come, first serve basis.

"It's a public service as our gift to the community. It's a tough time. We know there are families that want food and presents for their kids, and usually there is a sacrifice, and haircuts are often a sacrifice."

Christmas is a tough financial time for most low-income families, and this is being done on good faith, Pratt notes. Those who know they can afford a haircut are asked to honour those who can't by paying to have them done on another day.

"This day is strictly for low-income folks and families that could use a hand. There is no money involved this day, unless perhaps you wish to donate to a food bank."
