Summer in the South Cariboo doesn't last as long as many of us would hope. The leaves are changing, we've had our first frosty morning, and the cool evenings have arrived. For some, fall is a time for all things pumpkin spice, cozy nights by a warm fire, and crisp, cool mornings. For others, shorter days and less sunshine can bring on feelings of sadness as they anticipate the long winter ahead.
Whether you're a pumpkin spice enthusiast or a lover of summer sunshine, I've put together some tips to help make the transition from summer to fall more enjoyable and less gloomy.
Experiment with fall comfort foods: Fall is the perfect time to get creative in the kitchen. Seasonal harvest vegetables like carrots, squash, and brussels sprouts are abundant in the South Cariboo region this time of year. It’s a great opportunity to try out new recipes or refresh some old favourites using these fresh ingredients. Cooking can be a fulfilling and delicious form of self-care, offering a sense of accomplishment, pride, and mindfulness, all with the added bonus of enjoying your tasty creations
Local clubs and meetups: The South Cariboo is filled with a wide variety of clubs, offering something for everyone. Whether it’s a sports club, a social group, or a coffee club, there’s sure to be an activity that piques your interest. To find the perfect club or social group, try checking local bulletin boards, contacting the district office or going to their website, or searching on local social media pages. Joining a local club is a great way to get out of the house, meet new people, and engage with your community.
The great outdoors on sunny days: Taking advantage of sunny days when you can help reduce stress, ease anxiety, and increase serotonin levels, putting you in a happier mood. The town marsh is a great spot to get outside and stretch your legs. It's an easy walking trail that is perfect for a stroll any time of year, and during the winter months, the trail is kept clear for your enjoyment. The 99 Mile Recreation area also offers year-round outdoor activities. Whether it's walking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or snowmobiling once the snow arrives, there are a variety of trails to explore, including those suitable for low mobility
Something to look forward to: Planning next summer's adventures, getaways, or social gatherings not only gives you something to look forward to, but it can also help you get through stressful or tough times. When things get difficult, having something positive and exciting to anticipate can help keep your mind from focusing solely on the negative. The anticipation of an upcoming event can boost your mood, and with plenty of time to plan ahead, you may even find it sparks more creativity in coming up with fun things to do.
The transition from summer to fall offers an opportunity for rejuvenation—refreshing your mind, body, wardrobe, and home decor. As the season brings vibrant gold and red hues and the crisp scent of fall air, embracing the change can be both exciting and rewarding. With the right tips and tools, you can make this seasonal shift a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Remember to be kind to yourself, practice self-care, and reach out for help if you need it.
