The Grade 12’s will soon be graduating and hosting their own dry grad!
Dry Grad, otherwise known as Prom, will be held on June 15th. This is where they celebrate their graduation in a non-alcohol and drug-free safe space.
The Grade 12’s have been holding fundraisers all year in the 100 Mile House community, such as the Halloween haunted house at Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School, treats and hot chocolate stand at the Santa Clause parade, online auctions, ongoing bottle drives, individual prom tickets that the grad must pay for, and a pizza day that was held at the local radio station.
They also held a very exciting Grad vs Teacher hockey game where the teachers crushed the students!
This May there was also an amusing “Jail’N’Bail” where one grad student gets nominated by the RCMP to be arrested, then the student who was chosen had to raise $200 to be released!
The Jail and Bail fundraiser was held at the farmers market last Friday, May 10th, selling baked goods and hotdogs. The money that was raised here was put towards “bailing out” students, then ultimately put to the dry grad.
“Each year a grad committee is formed by parents of Grade 12 students and grads. For each fundraising event we ask for as many Grade 12s to help. Unfortunately most don’t help. This year we had about 10 key kids out of 81 that got involved,” Kristy Gosselin, the organizer of the dry grad, said.
All the money that is raised from these many events will help fund the the dinner, rentals, entertainment and everything else that goes along with holding this extraordinary celebration. This year’s theme is a casino with fake gambling games being set up for the grads to enjoy.
