No place like Lac La Hache

May truly was a busy month in the Lac La Hache area. Spring Fling was a great success with many vendors and customers alike. The fundraising ATV Poker Derby up at Mt. Timothy was also very well attended, and the Greeny Lake Fire Hall raised over $1,000 for organizing the derby.

The Lac La Hache Historical Society recently hosted a group of history enthusiasts at Felker Historic Homestead, just north of the town. About 25 people registered for the Cariboo Wagon Road Tour that began in Williams Lake and included sites of historic interest in the South Cariboo.

Sponsored by the Cariboo Chilcotin Elder College, the group was led by Loyd Czismadia, who presented a very lively and informative overview of the Felker family's arrival in the Cariboo in the 1800s and the adventures experienced in the earlier years of settlement. Thank you to Marilyn Buyar for this update.

Our post office in Lac la Hache was also hosting a bake sale as part of a fundraiser for the Canada Post Children’s Foundation. The bake sale raised just under $700! In total, the fundraiser raised $1,300 all month…but thanks to an anonymous and very special Lac la Hache resident who donated $1,700, the full goal of $3,000 was met. People are amazing in Lac La Hache! Simone would like to thank all the people who donated baked goods, items for draws, or money for the cause. Every penny raised will go to children in B.C.

Bear season is well underway, with regular bear sightings being reported in the area. We have seen them in the field on our ranch, and out horseback riding.  Let’s all be sure to keep the garbage locked up and be Bear Aware.

The Lac la Hache community dinner was on June 7 and was a chance to gather volunteers and do some networking, with an amazing spaghetti dinner. That was the day we got back on our road trip, so I didn’t make it this year.

My wife and I spent most of May travelling in our motorhome across this great country. We drove from Moncton, NB, all the way home. The East Coast was in a spell of miserable weather, so we started booking it east as soon as we got there. A few days of sunshine and cool weather in Ontario kept us on the move… man, does it ever take a long time to get out of Ontario! Once we hit the prairies, it was fire, smoke and wind for the most part.

I am sharing all this because as I was driving in from the north and arrived at the north end of Lac La Hache, I realized that we have an incredible gem here. Having travelled the breadth of Canada, there is no place like home.
