After the adoption of 2023’s annual general meeting minutes, a précis of events, and reading of the current treasurer’s report, the Mountain Spruce Community Centre's Aug. 17 annual general meeting heard president Barry Dennison report on maintenance/improvements.
At the hall, these included: water system maintenance; new table coverings and event sign flags; replacement of damaged tables; dart board lighting; and a new big-screen TV. Changes to MSCC’s insurance policy have enabled serving of alcohol at a few events.
The Park saw clean-up of downed/hazardous trees; mowing, including trail; completion of power to sorting shed; parking lot improvements; new park benches and ramp at sorting shed; trail grooming for winter use; and ongoing maintenance of locks and doors after break-ins. The potential use of cameras will be discussed with the Cariboo Regional District.
Dennison went on to specifically thank all those who participate in MSCC’s events, and especially those who run regular events like crib and jam night.
He offered MSCC’s sincere appreciation to the Nashes for spearheading and organizing the fishing derbies for 11 years and noted that, when you think it can’t get any better, it does! Complemented by the immense help of neighbours, friends and family, the 50/50 draw was $1,152; $1,110 in on-line ticket sales. Meanwhile, MSCC's fishing derby brought in $8,500 in regular ticket sales; and concession gross of over $1,200, all of which he called “absolutely amazing.”
He closed with: “At the end of this meeting, I will conclude my term as Chairperson and as a Director. It is with mixed feelings to say the least. Many things accomplished and many dreams unfulfilled. I would like to personally thank the fellow directors of the last two years for their help and support. To the directors continuing on, I wish you the best of luck and success in your terms forthcoming. It has been an honour to serve, and I thank you for the privilege.”
Greg Wray reported on recycling and its continuing increase in volume. He thanked those who pick up from the landfill and deliver to Gold Trail Recycling but noted that more volunteers are needed to deliver sorted materials into town. A new deck is now a “must” for the sorting shed. Vigilance is required after two break-ins this year; call Joanne at 250-593-0297 if you see anything amiss.
The meeting’s discussion of recycling break-ins, which have caused $1,200 in damage plus loss of revenue, culminated in a motion to purchase a 20’ Sea-Can to replace the sorting shed; this was passed unanimously. Various creative ideas are under discussion regarding its artistic future!
Tara Soebel asked that MSCC look into an Arts & Culture grant; it was noted that they will be applying for several grants this year.
Teresa Francis congratulated Shannon Sadlowski on being nominated as Citizen of the Year and thanked her for her unceasing efforts on MSCC’s behalf.
Several attendees asked that the financial report be e-mailed to them.
