Mountain Spruce Community Centre (MSCC) is winding down for Christmas!

At 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, they are setting up for the Christmas dinner; anyone who wishes to help is welcome. At the dinner tea and coffee are free, pop and water is $2 each and great door prizes are up for grabs!

There will be no crib, ladies’ night or jam night in December. Yoga is on Dec. 12 & 19 only.

The Annual All-Ages Polar Bear Walk & Scavenger Hunt is from noon to 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 1 in MSC Park, 6335 Mahood Lake Road. Enjoy hot dogs, hot chocolate, a fire to roast marshmallows and lots of prizes.

Everyone is welcome!

Condolences

Long-time Deka residents will be sorry to learn that Rodger Nordquist passed away Nov. 23 at the age of 88, after battling several health problems. He and Lynne lived at Deka until around Y2K. My deepest sympathy is extended to Lynne and their family.

And the entire area lost a wonderful pioneer when Helen Horn passed away Nov. 22 at the age of 100. Her long and inspiring life was celebrated on Dec. 3. RIP, Helen.

Christmas Giftboxes

Roe Lake & District Recreation Commission/Interlakes Community Centre’s (RLDRC/ICC) Christmas Giftboxes are in dire need of more donations. They usually provide some 25 hampers throughout the entire Interlakes area. Canned/dry goods would be greatly appreciated, but please check the expiry date. You can drop your donations off at ICC; or at Joyce McGregor’s Deka home; phone 250-644-7540 in advance to make sure she is home.

Money (cash/cheque) is much appreciated for buying last-minute “fresh” food and gifts. Make cheques payable to RLDRC with “Christmas boxes” on the subject line, and provide your details if you require a tax-deductible receipt.

The deadline for drop-offs is Dec. 15.

Bakers are needed at ICC from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8 and Thursday, Dec. 14. Call co-ordinator Susan Pizzuto at 778-908-3924 if you can help—ovens are limited!

Help for gift wrapping is also needed, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Dec. 11; for sorting goods, from 1 p.m., Dec. 19; and to put it all together on Dec. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Giftboxes will be delivered, or picked up by recipients, on Dec. 22 afternoon.

If you or someone you know needs a little help this Christmas, please call Joyce (for Deka District) or Susan with the details.

Ladies Only Auction

Jeanne Pittet conceived and has run Interlakes’ Ladies Only Auctions for several years, first from her home and, when attendees numbered over 50, at ICC. Each lady brings five/six women’s items they no longer want and auctions them off, and bids on others’ items they would like to have. Jeanne says November 18’s attendance was somewhat down over February’s, “maybe due to other goings-on in the community, the Santa Parade being a big one, but it went really well and we collected some food for the Christmas Giftboxes.” They also raised $93.25 cash for the Giftboxes, including $20 from a handmade Christmas tree donated by pickleball player, Jo Szabo.

In addition, in-house auctioneer, Lydia De Groot, donated three small rounds of cheese which fetched $90, earmarked for ICC’s outdoor pickleball courts.

“It was great fun, thanks to all the volunteers without whom it could not happen!”

Greetings

Upcoming birthday bubbly goes to Elaine Adams, Denise Kuyek, Piper Loft, Pat Pasanen, Bill Adams and Kris Verheul.

I wish you all a joyous, healthy and safe Christmas, with special blessings on those who have reason to be sad.
