Misha's Musings: Literally who are the BC Greens?

simplymastery reporter Misha Mustaqeem's monthly column to the Free Press

Who are the Green Party of BC?

According to Wikipedia, they are a provincial political party in British Columbia who promotes ecological wisdom, respect for diversity, social justice, nonviolence, sustainability, and participatory democracy. OK, but who are they? The reason I ask is because the Greens are now the only party out of the major four, which includes the Conservatives, BC United and BC NDP, who have not nominated any candidate for the Cariboo-Chilcotin riding.

That's odd. When it comes to such a party which in 2017 formed a literal kingmaker position and then allied with the BC NDP to form a coalition government until 2020 - you would expect them to nominate a worthwhile candidate. Maybe someone who cares a lot about the environment. That would make sense: green politics deals with environmentalism. In fact, they say "urgent action on climate change is necessary" and "we need climate action that focuses on the well-being of people, communities and nature" according to their website. Yet, I see no one running.

Cariboo-Chilcotin, a riding filled with amazing beauty and biodiversity, is not the only riding that the Greens have yet to name a candidate for. They have no candidate in Bulkley Valley-Stikine: a remote area of BC filled with the Coastal Mountains that border Alaska. They have no candidate in Salmon Arm-Shuswap: an area which made me fall in love with this beautiful province as a child. (My parents had rented out a lake house when I was a kid circa 2004). They have, as of this column, only nominated 18 candidates out of a possible 93. And yet this is a party that, according to 338Canada, will win two seats in BC almost by default.

Which begs the question: why? Maybe it just takes the Green Party of BC longer than other parties here to nominate several candidates. Maybe there are many factors that I and the voters of BC just do not know at this time. Maybe environmentalism isn't that popular. Or maybe there are political parties out there that just have the same message as them.

Or maybe, it's just that the BC Greens are having a hard time with actually trying to show up. Here is the thing: no one will care about your political party if you fail at promoting and marketing the party. So I would like to plead with the party: please nominate someone to at least run for Cariboo-Chilcotin.

Maybe there might be a base of voters. Maybe Lorne Doerkson, Michael Grenier or Michael Moses might make blunders that you could exploit for political gain. Because you are one of the four major political parties in BC. Please act like one. Please get your issues sorted out internally.

I'm not even being harsh because what blunders have you done? None. I'm just baffled.
