To the editor,
Re: Parking along Island Highway near Nanoose Bay clam beds an accident waiting to happen, Letters, A11.
I am a 35-year resident of Nanoose Bay. What I have seen on this stretch of highway at times stuns me.
As the writer of the article points out, I’ve seen doors opened into traffic and drivers swerve to the left lane to avoid contact, needless to say without doing a lane check. I’ve seen cars slow to a virtual stop in order to assess possible parking spots. Passengers unloading very close to fast-moving traffic. This last summer I saw what takes the cake – someone actually reversing into a spot while parallel parking.
It ought to be plainly obvious to those trying to park that this is a high-risk, if not completely stupid, idea in the first place. The stupidity is compounded by those who can do something to prevent this, choosing to ignore it. Perhaps this will get attention when people die there.
