There was a good turnout for the Green Lake Snowmobile Club’s trail-clearing event on Oct. 22.
Ten club members showed up for the event during cold and overcast weather.
Event organizer Ron Tonts said it was a good turnout and the volunteers split into three groups to clear the trees and woody debris that reached over and on the trails.
The volunteers cleared a lot of debris off the trails they worked on, and despite the cold temperatures, they were able to warm up from their chainsaw work and pitching the trees and limbs off the trails.
Other than the trees and limbs on the ground, Tonts said the trails are in good condition considering all of the traffic they get during the year.
There will be another trail-clearing event [to clear trails they didn’t clear on the first event] on Saturday, Nov. 11.

People who use the South Green Lake trails are asked to show up at the Clubhouse (176 Green Lake South Rd.) at 9 a.m. to help with trail clearing. Bring your ATV’s, chain saws, shears and a lunch (volunteers gather to have lunch together) to help make sure the trails are safe for sledding this winter.
The volunteers usually get back to the Clubhouse by 3 p.m.
Games night
Convener Sue Olliffe said the recent card night was a lot of fun.
“It was a rotating crib tournament, so you changed players after four hands were dealt,” Olliffe said. “It was great because we got to socialize with a lot of different people. We had five tables of four people, so there were 20 players in total.”
Six new members from North Green Lake travelled over for the card night and they brought some fresh energy with them. Two of them ran the tournament.
She added there were three other people at the event and they played their own card games.
The club is looking at having another game night in November, but they don’t have a date yet. Olliffe said game nights are free for members and $5 for guest players.
“We will be doing different game nights. Some nights will be an organized game, some will be bring your favourite board game or card game.”
Potluck dinner
Olliffe noted the Halloween Potluck is on Saturday, Oct. 28, with the doors opening at 5 p.m. and dinner starting at 6 p.m.
People are asked to bring a dinner dish, or dessert, she added.
The event is free for members. Costs for guests have not been decided yet.
“There will a prize for the best costume, a few games and a 50/50 draw.”
Wildfire risk reduction coming soon
Another wildfire risk reduction project on South Green Lake will be starting in the next week or two.
It will be a hand treatment of pruning, thinning, piling, and when conditions are good, there will be pile burning.
The Nolan Creek Interface fuel break is 50.3 hectares (ha) along the back of the private land from the end of the provincial park to the end of the Green Lake South Road.
The total area being treated this year is almost 15 ha and then another 34.5 ha next year. There will be active work site signs.
